LPDDR5 Controller
Overview
The LPDDR5 controller core receives commands via a straightforward local interface and converts them into the necessary command sequences for LPDDR5 devices. It handles initialisation, refresh cycles, and power-down operations autonomously. Additionally, the core employs bank management logic to oversee the state of each LPDDR bank. Banks are opened or closed as needed to reduce access latency, ensuring efficient memory operations.
Features
- Increased Bandwidth: LPDDR5 achieves higher data transfer rates compared to LPDDR4/X, supporting speeds ranging from 4266 MT/s to 6400 MT/s. This significant increase in speed enhances memory bandwidth, enabling faster data access and superior performance in mobile devices.
- Backward Compatibility: Designed for enhanced power efficiency, LPDDR5 introduces new low-power states such as Deep Sleep Mode (DSM) to minimise power consumption during idle periods. Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) allows the memory to operate at lower voltages, effectively conserving power without compromising performance.
- Efficiency Enhancements: LPDDR5 supports higher memory densities compared to LPDDR4/X, accommodating up to 24 Gb (gigabits) per die. This capability enables mobile devices to incorporate larger memory capacities without increasing physical size, supporting the growing demands of modern applications.
- Increased Bandwidth: LPDDR5 integrates advanced features like Forward Error Correction (FEC) and CA-PAR (Command/Address Parity) to enhance data reliability and integrity. Combined with its increased bandwidth and reduced latency, LPDDR5 delivers improved overall performance suitable for demanding applications such as 5G, AI (Artificial Intelligence), and high-resolution multimedia.
- Backward Compatibility: Maintaining compatibility with existing mobile architectures, LPDDR5 introduces new features that enhance performance and efficiency. It is backward compatible with LPDDR4/X, facilitating seamless integration into existing mobile device designs without requiring significant changes.
- Efficiency Enhancements: LPDDR5 memory is predominantly used in high-end smartphones, tablets, AR/VR devices, and other mobile computing devices that demand high-speed, low-power memory solutions. Its capabilities cater to the increasing requirements of mobile gaming, multimedia streaming, and multitasking on modern mobile platforms.
