DDR4/5 Controller
Integrates MAC IP to a broad range of PHY and SerDes IP
Overview
DDR4 and DDR5 controllers are essential for modern computing, enabling faster data access, higher bandwidth, and improved energy efficiency in memory subsystems. They manage communication between the CPU or SoC and DDR memory modules, ensuring efficient read and write operations. These controllers control memory access timing and synchronisation, ensuring accurate data transfer aligned with CPU operations. They also monitor power consumption and thermal output, optimising performance while ensuring reliability in diverse computing applications.
Features
DDR4(Double Data Rate 4)
- Bandwidth: DDR4 provides higher peak data rates per pin compared to DDR3, facilitating faster data transfer between the CPU and memory.
- Power Consumption: Operates at lower voltages (typically 1.2V) compared to DDR3, contributing to improved energy efficiency and reduced heat generation.
- Error Correction: Enhanced error correction capabilities (ECC) compared to previous generations ensure data integrity and system reliability.
- Density and Capacity: DDR4 supports larger memory module capacities and higher densities compared to DDR3, accommodating the increasing demands of modern applications and workloads.
- Applications: DDR4 controllers are widely employed in desktop PCs, laptops, servers, and high-performance computing (HPC) systems where faster memory access and higher bandwidth are critical for optimal application performance.
DDR5(Double Data Rate 5)
- Data Rates: DDR5 supports significantly higher data transfer rates compared to DDR4, starting from 4800 MT/s and potentially scaling up to 6400 MT/s and beyond.
- Efficiency: DDR5 achieves higher performance with lower power consumption, thanks to enhancements in signalling and voltage regulation.
- Error Handling: DDR5 features enhanced error correction mechanisms and improved reliability compared to DDR4.
- On-Die ECC: Some DDR5 implementations integrate error correction directly on the memory die, improving efficiency and reducing latency.
- Applications: DDR5 controllers are designed for next-generation computing systems, including servers, data centres, high-performance gaming PCs, and AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning) applications, where maximising memory bandwidth and efficiency is crucial.
